Military
coup participant Jaime Milans del Bosch, who
died the week of 3 August 1997, maintained a
very different relationship with the region.
His military history aside, Milans del Bosch’s
family kept a summer home in the San Roque tourist
complex in SotoGrande. However, his definitive
link with the area would be established a year
and a half later when, as Lieutenant General
of Military Region III, Milans del Bosch ordered
tanks brought out onto the streets on the afternoon
of 23 February 1981.
After
a military trial, Milans del Bosch was to be
exiled to the south. From the end of 1982 until
the middle of 1983, Capitan General Jaime Milans
del Bosch remained confined to Campo de Gibraltar.
His confinement to this area was related to
one of the coup attempts that followed that
of 23 February—a dark succession of events whose
true implications are still not fully understood,
even 15 years after they occurred. What is certain
is that Milans del Bosch was taken to the Huerta
del General, summer residence of the military
leaders of Campo de Gibraltar (today Huerta
Grande), located between Algeciras and Tarifa.
Milans
del Bosch arrived by helicopter to the area
on Monday, 4 October 1982.
The
Supreme Court sentenced Tejero and Milans del
Bosch each to 30 years in prison, and Milans
delBosch, along with Alfonso Armada, were dismissed
from the Army.
During his stay at Huerta del
General, Milans del Bosch was guarded by a group
of soldiers, under the command of then Commander
Galindo, who is currently a Lieutenant-Colonel.
To ensure against a possible escape from the
Huerta, they were protected by barbed wire and
strict surveillance. |
