The
importance of Gibraltar as a strategic military
base has made it a place over which the world’s
major powers have competed for control.
The
presence of British, German and Italian agents
kept the bars, hotels and nightclubs in the area
buzzing with spies. Huerta Grande’s “Casa del
Espia” stands as proof of this, as it sheltered
Italian spies who worked for Mussolini during
World War II. From its magnificent location, the
Strait, the traffic of war ships, and the Rock
could all be seen.
The
famous H Force(an important British formation
that would defend the Western Mediterranean for
the Allies),Operation Felix, (considered a key
step towards the defeat of the British) and Operation
Torch are just a few of the events that took place
during World War II and which have gone down in
history; many of these events were related to
the Campo de Gibraltar area.
